SOLVEI Legal started as a fork of Mike OSS (a ready-made self-hosted infrastructure: authentication, API gateway, local LLM via Ollama), originally built for Anglo-American law. Solvei's additions make it genuinely Italian: terminology and legal logic drawn from the civil code (not translations), the mcp-legal-it connector with 214 tools that query regulatory sources in real time, and an on-demand GPU for the harder cases — all running locally, with no data sent to third-party clouds.
From Mike OSS: a ready-made infrastructure
Mike (My Insider Knowledge Engine) is an open-source AI legal assistant built for Anglo-American law firms. Its public fork on GitHub provides a complete, well-designed infrastructure: user authentication with GoTrue, a relational database with PostgreSQL and PostgREST, an API gateway with Kong, an Express.js backend, and a Next.js frontend. The language model is served through Ollama — meaning it runs entirely locally, with no data sent to any external cloud service.
It's a solid foundation. But it's built for Anglo-American law: English terminology, Anglo-American regulatory references, common-law contract logic. For an Italian lawyer or consultant, using it as-is means getting answers that are technically plausible but legally wrong for Italy's system.
The starting infrastructure
- Multi-user authentication with GoTrue (standard JWT)
- Kong 2.8.1 API gateway with configurable routing
- PostgREST for REST access to the PostgreSQL database
- Next.js frontend with built-in AI chat
- Ollama integration for local LLMs
The Italian specialization
- A fully Italian prompt system using civil-code terminology
- An MCP connector with 214 Italian legal tools
- A GPU widget to power up compute on demand
- Dark/light mode toggle and an interface adapted to legal workflows
- Real-time access to Italian legal sources
Like the entire solveiAgents platform, SOLVEI Legal runs locally. Client data, contract text, litigation strategy — none of it ever leaves the server. No data is processed by OpenAI, Google, or any other cloud provider.
A platform that actually speaks Italian law
A language model can answer in Italian without actually knowing Italian law. It can translate Anglo-American concepts into Italian words — but underneath, it's still reasoning with the wrong categories: “landlord” becomes “proprietario,” but the legal system applied is common law, not the civil code.
SOLVEI Legal is built differently. The system is oriented toward Italian legal context from the ground up: it knows the rules governing leases, how contracts get registered, each party's tax obligations, statutory deadlines. When it answers about a rental agreement, it knows the standard term is four years, renewable, that the landlord (locatore) has specific obligations for major repairs, and that alternative tax regimes exist. It isn't a translation — it's actual expertise.
The technical language is correct: conduttore (tenant, in the civil code's precise sense), not the looser affittuario; locatore (landlord) in the civil code's contractual sense; onere della prova (burden of proof) within the framework of Italian civil procedure. The regulatory references are the right ones: the civil code, special statutes, Court of Cassation case law. Not approximations.
Italian contract law
Leases, sales, public contracts, corporate law: terminology from the Italian civil code, not translated from English. Correct regulatory references for every legal instrument.
Civil and criminal procedure
Statutory deadlines, limitation periods, levels of appeal, remedies: the system answers using the logic of the Italian legal system, not the Anglo-American one.
Tax law
Tax treatment of leases, VAT, registration tax, the cedolare secca flat-rate rental tax: the system knows the Italian rates, deadlines, and calculation methods.
Labor law
National collective labor agreements (CCNL), dismissals, fixed-term contracts, protections: the Italian regulatory framework, kept current with the most recent decrees.
214 built-in Italian legal tools
A language model's memory is rarely updated and stops at a fixed date. For a lawyer, that's a problem: legislation changes, case law evolves, a six-month-old circular from Italy's Revenue Agency can overturn an established practice overnight.
SOLVEI Legal integrates mcp-legal-it, an open-source connector that links the AI directly to Italian legal sources. When the AI needs a regulatory reference, it doesn't rely on its own memory — it queries the source in real time. The result is always current and always citable.
